Joanna has been painting ever since she can remember. She is, in all senses of the word, a 'natural'. Although she specializes as a watercolourist of nature scenes, other media and other subjects are no strangers to her. For example, she is also well known for her work as a Designer for a variety of Carnival bands, and for her unique brand of ceramic tile art produced by Jada.
Joanna was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1957 to John and Helen Humphrey. She learned to love the arts from an early age from her parents – Helen is an interior decorator and costume designer, and John, apart from being a politician, is an architect and carnival designer - who encouraged her natural talents.
After attending school at Bishop's Highschool in Trinidad, Joanna was formally trained at the Laguna Beach School of Art in California.
Also, in Trinidad she was awarded a scholarship by the Field Naturalists' Society to attend a Painting From Nature course under renowned bird illustrator, Arthur Singer.
Her own technique is unique, though, and she considers herself mostly self-taught.
Joanna credits her parents, Mrs Clark (her art teacher at Bishop's), Pat Bishop and Peter Minshall as the people who have most influenced her career as an artist. Other artistic influences are Michel Jean Cazabon and a painting by Ernest Parton that was given to her by her grandparents.
In Trinidad, Joanna has had six successful exhibitions; however, most of her work is done on commission. Her paintings have also been exhibited internationally as part of the Trinidad & Tobago Through The Eyes Of The Artist tour. Collectors in America and Europe have acquired many of her paintings; one hangs in the Vatican; another is on display in the Prime Minister’s Residence, Port of Spain.
Joanna is married with six children and currently resides in England.
